SPRING BREAKERS (2012)

Easily my favorite movie of the year so far. It’s almost a perfect movie to me. It does not do a lot of explaining in the story, there’s a ton of nudity, and revolves a lot around rap. GUCCI MANE IS IN IT!!!!!!!!

That’s my whole review! Now go see this movie! Please!

This is why Spring Breakers is great: there is a montage of robberies committed by Alien (James Franco), Candy (Vanessa Hudgens), Brittany (Ashley Benson), and Cotty (Rachel Korine) with Britney Spears’ “Every Time” playing as the backdrop. What’s even better is the reason the song is playing: before the masked and bikini-clad girls commit a crime, they ask Alien, sitting at his outdoor piano, to play something inspiring. So he starts playing “Every Time,” complete with singing. It’s funny, it’s creepy, it’s amazing, and it’s exactly what I wanted out of this movie.

Spring Breakers surprisingly reminded me a lot of Drive and Only God Forgives; it’s somewhat experimental in its placement of scenes and characters repeat important lines over and over in different contexts to the point that we as the audience become unclear of when they’re really said. The colors are super bright and saturated for a lot of the scenes like in Only God Forgives. But I think what I liked most was the horror and the humor. It’s really funny in a really dark way; like when Brittany and Candy stick loaded guns in Alien’s mouth and makes him perform oral sex on the guns, afterwards Alien says “You’re my motherfuckin’ soulmates.” It’s so insane and funny and was really perfect. And Spring Breakers brings out a lot of what’s so scary about spring break; the insane amount of drugs and alcohol, the unsafe sex, the objectification of women. The opening shows this perfectly, by showing young, beautiful kids partying on a beach to a Skrillex song. Once the beat drops, however, the scene gets darker and darker as the partying kids become more naked and start doing weirder stuff.

Spring Breakers is really not what I thought it was going to be. But it was so much better.
