Okay, this is a movie I was definitely obsessed with at one point as a young kid. I know this for a fact because there was one week during one summer when I was in elementary school that I watched this movie so many times that it actually gave me nightmares (which I still remember, it mostly involved vampires flying around outside), even though the movie didn’t scare me at all.
I watched a few seasons (they all kind of run together for me) of Buffy the Vampire Slayer the TV show when it was on, which was either right around when I was really into the movie or not long after, which is sort of interesting looking back considering the movie and the TV show have such little in common. I haven’t watched the show since then, so I can’t really make any comments on that, except I loved it when it was on. But this movie is something that’s just really stuck with me.
The story is so weird and so goofy, with just the right amount of creepiness. It’s also a really incredible time capsule for the late 80’s/early 90’s Valley Girl fashion trend, except it’s actually not making of it, but reveling in it. It also has a pre-fame Hilary Swank and Paul Reubens as a cocky vampire who won’t die. It’s all so weird and great.
I really can’t say if one version of Buffy is better than the other, but you should see this movie if you’ve ever been into the show, if for no other reason than to see Buffy‘s beginnings, at least from a real-time standpoint.
It took me awhile to watch this movie. I got super into Buffy and Angel in college but I don’t think I watched the old Buffy movie until after college when I was living back home. It’s actually pretty great! I mean it’s not as good as the best Buffy episode but it’s certainly better than ‘Beer Bad’ and it’s almost like watching an alternate Buffy World. And of course Donald Sutherland is a badass, even if he’s just creepy in this movie, and I would hate for Paul Reubens as a vampire to hunt me down.
I can’t say I’m ready to see it again but if you are at all interested in the Buffy universe you need to check this out. This also reminds me that I need to watch the final season of Angel.
